The following information will serve to assist you in writing and formatting your article for submission.

Submission Process

Manuscripts are submitted via ReView (hosted by River Valley Technology), following which, they will undergo initial editorial checks at our internal editorial office to ensure they are in scope, fulfil the criteria for submission and include relevant supporting data. This includes paper title, author affiliations, conflict of interest statement, data availability statement and funding statement.

Preparing Your Manuscript

Format

We accept manuscripts prepared in MS Word formats (doc, docx) and Latex documents (.tex).
Supplementary files may be submitted in any standard, non-proprietary formats.

There are two options for writing your article:

  • Use the IntechOpen MS Word Template
  • Use your own document that follows the structure outlined in our template

We strongly encourage all authors to use the official MS Word template to ensure your manuscript includes all mandatory sections and is correctly formatted. This significantly optimises both the review and production process.

Your manuscript must include the following elements:

  • Title
  • Author list (presented in English; including full author names and institution names, with one corresponding author using an official institutional email)
  • Abstract (a single, unstructured paragraph (200–250 words, no references, figures or tables in Abstract allowed))
  • Keywords (minimum of 3, maximum of 5)
  • Introduction (must be titled “1. Introduction”)
  • Body of the text (with at least one additional numbered section and/or subsections)
  • Conclusion section
  • List of References – formatted in Vancouver style (numbered in square brackets ([1], [2], [3-5], etc.), sequentially in-text and in the reference list). Include DOI where available.
  • Figures/Tables/Equations must be numbered; Figures/Tables must contain a caption, and must be cited in the body of the text
  • Author Contributions – must be declared using the CRediT taxonomy
  • Funding Section – state all funding sources, or declare “Not applicable.”
  • Ethical Statement – required if the study involved human/animal subjects. If not applicable, state: “Not applicable.”
  • Data Availability Statement – required in all manuscripts. Include repository link, DOI, or note data is available upon request
  • Conflict of Interest – declare any conflicts or use: “The authors declare no conflict of interest
  • Acknowledgments – include details of institutional or individual support, and disclose if any AI tools were used for writing or editing the manuscript
  • Notes/Thanks/Other Declarations – include only if applicable. Choose only one section title
  • Appendices and Nomenclature – insert before the reference, list if included

You can download the MS Word template here.

The template contains all necessary sections and guidance for inserting your content. It is compatible with MS Office, LibreOffice, and OpenOffice, though best results are achieved using MS Office.

Important: In the final layout, figures and tables will be placed at the top or bottom of the page, near their first mention in the text. Custom text alignment is not supported—text will be left-aligned in all articles.

For LaTeX submissions:

When sending your article in LaTeX, the source file(s) must be accompanied by the compiled PDF and all the media files. We must be able to compile the article without errors on our end. We currently do not offer a Latex template, please contact our editorial staff at journals@intechopen.com and they will provide you with guidance with this aspect.

If submitting in LaTeX, please ensure the manuscript includes all required sections as per our Word template.

Self Citation

Self-citation itself is not forbidden, as long as it is not used as citation manipulation.

Citation manipulation can come in forms such as:

  • The Editor pressures an author to add citations from the editor's works in order to increase citation rates,
  • The Author extensively adds citations from his/her own previous published works.

Citation manipulation can be identified by the fact that the citations do not contribute to the scholarly content of the article and have been included solely for the purpose of increasing citations.

Generally, there are no uniform criteria to identify excessive self-citation, so authors should be careful with self-citations to avoid possible publishing ethics issues.

For more information please refer to the IntechOpen's Citation Policy as well as COPE guidance on citation manipulation.

Permissions

Authors wishing to include figures, tables, or text passages that have already been published elsewhere are required to obtain permission from the copyright owner(s) for both the print and online format.

Please consult the following guide for more information on different ways you can request copyright permission: http://cdn.intechopen.com/public/docs/RightsLink_Guide.pdf.

We do not require Authors to submit copyright permissions along with their manuscripts, but we may ask you to provide them if there are reasons to suspect that any part of your manuscript infringes upon a third-party’s copyright.

Legitimate reuse of third-party content must include copyright holder and licensing information for the content being reused.

Manuscript Length

Original ResearchUp to 15 pagesUp to 12,000 words
ReviewUp to 15 pagesUp to 12,000 words
Mini ReviewUp to 5 pagesUp to 7,500 words
Case ReportsUp to 5 pagesUp to 7,500 words
News & ViewsUp to 5 pagesUp to 5,000 words

* Please note this is just a general suggestion. We can accept shorter or longer manuscripts, provided that the scientific content is of high value.

The number of pages includes the entirety of the content: the main text (abstract, keywords, affiliations, references + additional material). Additional material includes figures. If you are working on a review or primary research format, please try to include the figures in the 15 pages range. If you are working on a case report or mini-review format, please try to include the figures in the 5 pages range. However, this is not mandatory, and we can allow a certain level of flexibility - due to the journal's concept. It means that we can accept manuscripts up to 25-30 pages - altogether (figures included).
