Sheila Tobias - Author, Consultant, and Speaker on Mathematics and Science Education

Sheila Tobias comes to the study of STEM careers as an educator, university administrator, and initiator of programs in STEM tailor made for women students. She was trained at Harvard and Columbia Universities not in STEM but in history and politics to become what she calls a “scholar activist”. The author of 14 books, six of them having to do with opportunities and barriers for students in STEM, she is known all over the U.S. for her pioneering work in “math anxiety” and physical science avoidance. She has been supported for 14 years by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to develop and propagate the Professional Science Master’s programs in the U.S. and by local universities to seed similar programs in The Netherlands. She is the co-editor of a special issues of the journal Industry & Higher Education tracking government managed, STEM, published in the U.K. in 2006.
